The Morton Arboretum

Research Fellow

May 2021 • Lisle, IL

What I liked

I loved the entire experience! Gaining hands on lab experience significantly increased my confidence and interest in working in a science lab. Attending meetings and presenting my work trained me to speak professionally and forced me to strengthen my communication skills. I feel more prepared to make meaningful contributions in my future workplaces.

What I wish was different

Truly nothing.

Advice

Part of my job included keeping a daily log of the tasks I completed and the lessons I learned. I highly recommend students daily reflect on how they are growing through their work experience and note what they could improve. Doing so helped me stay encouraged that my work was worthwhile, but also invited me to reflect on further ways I could improve myself.

Undergraduate Research Fellow

June 2018 • Lisle, IL

What I liked

Conducting independent research in an area of focus that was different than the research opportunities at North Central College.

What I wish was different

Nothing, I absolutely loved it! I am continuing my fellowship this school year.

Advice

Researching at non-academic institutions can provide you life long connections that can be used in the future for other research positions or jobs.
