I loved the ability to work with the museum archivists, help researchers, and conduct my own research for my thesis. It was incredible learning about the archival process in the museum and gain hands on experience.
What I wish was different
I wish that there was more structure. Often I was left to figure things out on my own and worked independently instead of with a team. However, this independence taught me a lot about the archives and research process.
Advice
This internship is what you make out of it. It can be monotonous or incredibly engaging based off how much effort you put in.

Archaeology Intern
June - August 2019 • New York City, NY
What I liked
This internship was really fun and immersive. Because it is only three days a week, you could technically get another job on the side to make up for it being an unpaid internship. Otherwise, I learned a lot about the fundamentals of conducting archaeological work through a museum.
What I wish was different
I wish this internship was paid and went five days a week.
Advice
If you were to take on this internship, definitely figure out expenses. Living 10 weeks in New York City is very expensive and can be a challenge for some. Luckily I am from New York so I was able to move back home, but I still had to pay commuting costs which added up to about $500 a month.

REU intern
May - August 2019 • New York City, NY
What I liked
Everything! Seeing the exhibits everyday and seeing the "behind the scenes". I greatly enjoyed the research that I did and interacting with the museum collections and the staff. I was give a dorm in Manhattan and had a lot of fun exploring my neighborhood.
What I wish was different
Not much, perhaps it could have been longer, though I already stayed for ten weeks. Overall it was a great program and everyone was very supportive.
Advice
That undergraduate students should take risks and find internships that they want to be involved with. You won't know if you are qualified until you try and even if you do not get the position, writing applications is an important skill that should be practiced.
