FT Faculty English Instructor

Position Summary
Big Bend Community College (BBCC) invites applications for a full-time, English Instructor.  The English Department is a four-person department in the larger Humanities Division. Our college seeks innovative faculty who practice equitable and inclusive instruction, who value the academic success of their students, and who love to teach. We particularly welcome those who will be active participants in our small but thriving college community.

The base salary for our full-time faculty is $56,540 for a 173-day contract. Placement on our salary scale is based upon experience and credentials. Big Bend offers candidates a straight forward, supportive tenure process with three years to the first promotion along with generous support and funding for professional development. Our faculty benefit from a connection to a statewide network of conferences to enhance instruction. The anticipated start date for this position is September 13, 2021.

Big Bend Community College (BBCC) is a comprehensive public community college serving a large, rural district in central Washington State. BBCC’s main campus is located in the City of Moses Lake (pop. 24,009) in Grant County, situated on the former Larson Air Force Base. In addition to the central campus, BBCC has learning centers in seven outlying communities that provide adult basic education, high school completion, and English Language Learning programs as gateways to college. We are accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities and we serve approximately 4,000 students, with an annualized FTE of approximately 2,000.

Essential Job Duties
Essential responsibilities will include, but not be limited to the following:
  • Prepare and teach English courses; this may include day, evening, hybrid and online classes. Teaching load will include primarily English Composition I and Composition II with other English courses such as Technical Writing, Creative Writing, and various literature courses. 
  • Offer regular and predictable access to students through posted office hours, electronic communication, and other appropriate methods.
  • Instruct, assist, and motivate students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed substantive feedback on assignments and discussions.
  • Advise students; assist students in planning an educational program and in selecting courses, and when necessary refer students to appropriate student services for assistance.
  • Participate as an active member of working committees dealing with instruction, college-wide and department assessment, student matters and/or college related concerns.
  • Represent and advocate for the English Department at Humanities Division and campus-wide meetings.
  • Design, implement, and document assessment tasks with and for the English Department.
  • Work effectively with colleagues and students of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and be a positive contributing member of the campus community.
  • Provide advice and support for English associate (adjunct) faculty in conjunction with the department.
  • Maintain positive and effective communications with students, faculty, administration and staff.
  • Foster a flexible, healthy learning environment with respect for student diversity.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to professional growth, development, and conduct.
  • Other duties as agreed to with division chair or administrator.
Minimum & Desirable Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
At the time of application, all applicants must possess the following:
  • A Master's degree in Rhetoric and Composition, English, Writing, or other closely related fields from a regionally accredited institution with significant coursework in graduate-level English.
  • Successful teaching experience at the post-secondary level (university, community college, or dual enrollment).
  • Experience working with students from diverse academic, age, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.  
Additional Desirable Qualifications:
  • Teaching experience English composition courses at the community college level. 
  • Emphasis in teaching or research that focuses on Chicanx, Latinx, or indigenous literature.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the role of the community college in education.
  • Experience implementing innovative teaching methods to improve student success and retention such as flipped instruction, coordinated studies, team teaching, active learning, or computer-aided instruction.
  • Experience with online learning, hybrid courses, and learning management systems (Canvas, Blackboard, etc.) that incorporates regular and substantive interaction.
  • Demonstrated multicultural experience (fluency in other languages, work experience, or literary/cultural/travel experience) which add breadth and depth to teaching.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency.
