Arts Department Head

Sherwood Forest Camp is the only independent, non-profit youth development agency in the St. Louis region providing resident camp experiences for elementary school age children from economically disadvantaged families. We have a rich 80-year history, and with innovating programming being developed each and every year, a truly promising future.
Position Summary:
Arts Department Head oversees all arts and crafts activities within camp, including daily activity offerings, evening activities, and special events. This includes proper preparation and training of staff regarding creative and performing arts activities. This position also serves as a supervisor within camp and will be expected to fulfill supervisory duties beyond department area.
Job Requirements and Responsibilities:
- Supervise all programs, events and staff related to creative and performing arts.
- Help train, supervise and evaluate instructors.
- Assist in daily scheduling of instructors and cabin groups. Supervise the create arts areas daily.
- Direct, guide, adapt and enrich Arts activities to meet the physical, emotional, and developmental needs of all campers.
- Establish and maintain safe operational procedures for the creative and performing arts areas.
- Assist in planning of special camp programs and events.
- Coordinate overall scheduling of programs and activities in the creative arts programs.
- Manage inventory of program area equipment and supplies.
- Meets with instructors to evaluate their work performance on a regular basis.
- Meet with Program Director as needed.
- Participates in nighttime duties.
- Actively participates in other aspects of camp life.
- Participates in personnel and all camp evaluations.
- Assist in other administrative and supervisory tasks as needed.
- Other duties, which may be assigned by Program Director, Assistant Camp Director or Camp Director.
Qualifications & Certifications:
- Valid Class E Driver’s License
- Experience working with children
- Prior experience with camp or other recreational activities with children desired
- Experience in creative arts and simple crafts, including, but not limited to, pottery, beading, textiles, puppetry, painting, drawing, dance, music, paper- mâché, etc.
- Experience in performing arts, such as music, dance, or theater, preferred
- Familiarity with safety procedures, equipment use and care related to their program area
Skills & Abilities:
- Strong interpersonal skills, especially with regards to accepting guidance and feedback
- Strong organizational, written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to supervise and maintain an effective working relationship with instructors, group leaders and campers.
- Ability to plan and organize camp programs and events related to their program area
Essential Functions:
- Possess strength and endurance to maintain constant supervision of campers and staff.
- Ability to obtain a Class E license, become an approved driver under SFC insurance, and operate a motor vehicle safely.
- Abilities to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
- Ability to effectively communicate in person or by phone, and exchange accurate information.
- Ability to work and navigate in a variety of terrain and weather conditions.
- Ability to use visual and auditory abilities to identify and respond to environmental issues and hazardous situations.
- Ability to visually assess operations of camp
- Ability to work long hours.
- Ability to live at camp over the summer.
Considerations for COVID-19:
Sherwood Forest is planning to operate Summer 2021 under strict COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions. All staff will be expected to adhere to all guidelines and restrictions in order to preserve a safe and healthy camp environment for each member of our camp community. Some of these guidelines include, but are not limited to:
- Remaining on camp property for the duration of the camp season.
- Following strict social distancing measures, including wearing a mask most of the day.
- Following strict sanitation and cleanliness guidelines as outlined by the Center for Disease Control.
