POSITION DESCRIPTION SUMMARY STATEMENT: Under the guidance of a mentor, the Oral History Intern would learn the skills necessary to the “cycle’ of oral histories of veterans as practiced by the PMML

INTENDED PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT: 
Intern will develop the skills necessary to work in an already existing Oral History program, and or to initiate an oral history project either for personal reasons (e.g. genealogy) or for work purposes (e.g. public library that is embarking on project to interview local veterans). 
The intern will acquire applicable web skills related to oral history.
The student will acquire or enhance his/her knowledge of military history.

ESSENTIAL POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability/willingness to learn basic functions of software needed to carry out oral history tasks (e.g., captioning using YouTube, web editing, uploading photos on oral history pages, interviewing via Cisco WebEx)
  • Attention to detail and commitment to final product: accurate written transcript of the interview
  • Experience in proof reading & editing
  • Ability to write abstracts clearly
  • Research skills to the degree needed to prepare interview questions and check terms
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word and ability to format
  • Willingness to schedule interview and arrange for legally required paperwork
  • Ability to conduct interviews & follow up 
  • Ability to work independently

ASSIGNED RESPONSIBLITIES AND DUTIES
  • Use transcription software on You-Tube to prepare a basic transcript to be followed auditing and editing of transcripts. Use of NCH playback software 
  • Editing or proofreading of prepared transcripts
  • Writing brief biographies of the interviewees for the Holt Oral History Program website
  • Web editing and adding of scans of photos to Oral History pages
  • Researching military historical background of a veteran who will be interviewed, using the biographical survey as a basis, to be followed by reference sources
  • Researching military, geographic terms, as needed, in transcription and editing.
  • Identifying time stamps (segments) in the production of dramatic parts for media purposes
  • Schedule interview and arrange for required paperwork
  • Conduct and interview and follow up
