The Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) is dedicated to enriching Chicago’s artistic vitality and cultural vibrancy. This includes fostering the development of Chicago’s non-profit arts sector, independent working artists, and for-profit arts businesses; providing a framework to guide the City’s future cultural and economic growth, via the 2012 Chicago Cultural Plan; marketing the City’s cultural assets to a worldwide audience; and presenting high-quality, free and affordable cultural programs for residents and visitors.
The position will report to the Creative Director and/or staff designers performing various program support and administrative duties related to graphic design in the areas of adverting and marketing.
Internships are limited to one, 12 month, academic year. Students are limited to working one internship (lasting no more than one 12 month academic year) per City Department.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Assist in the design of marketing and advertising print or digital pieces using Adobe Creative Suite applications (Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign), working creatively within project parameters including but not limited to: deadlines, specifications, brand guidelines
- Assist in the design of marketing and advertising print or digital pieces for concerts and exhibitions at the Chicago Cultural Center, Millennium Park and other DCASE-run venues throughout Chicago
- Assist in the design of marketing and advertising collateral for City festivals/events including but not limited to: Chicago Air and Water Show, Chicago Blues Festival, Chicago Gospel Music Festival, Chicago Jazz Festival, Chicago SummerDance, Millennium Park Summer Music Series, and Taste of Chicago
- Assist with designing assets for social media, web and e-communications
- Prepare design files for print/release
- Work with City print shop and contracted print vendors
- Work with DCASE staff to traffic/track design jobs, using Basecamp, Microsoft Office applications and other project management tools
- Perform various administrative duties assigned by the design staff, including laminating, trimming, and print collateral pickup or distribution
- Perform additional functions to support other DCASE festivals, programs, and events, including attendance at events, and routine clerical and administrative duties involving copying, scanning, document preparation, filing, correspondence, answering the telephone, mailings, tracking, event set up, and using social media to promote DCASE events and activities
- Perform related duties as required

NOTE: This is a temporary position. Year-long (Summer 2019 – Spring 2020) internship, work 20 hours per week during the summer/breaks and 10 hours per week during the academic year; have a flexible work schedule. Possible to work early mornings, weekdays, evenings, weekends, and holidays during festivals and special events. Position is assigned both indoors and outdoors.

Education, Training, and Experience
Must be a student in good academic standing currently enrolled in an accredited college, university, or law school OR a student in good academic standing currently enrolled in an accredited business or data processing/ information technology school. Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 grading scale or a 3.5 on a 5.0 grading scale.
Students must maintain the required GPA throughout the duration of their employment / internship
Must be enrolled in school with a minimum of 6 credit hours (or quarter hour equivalency) throughout the duration of internship, with the exception of academic breaks, i.e. summer. Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications –Word, Excel and Power Point.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
This position requires applicants to complete an interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be selected.
PREFERENCE will be given to candidates possessing the following:
- Students majoring in Graphic Design/Visual Communications and/or Art
- Proficiency in graphic design software and products, such as Adobe Creative Suite applications (In Design, Illustrator, Photoshop, Fireworks, Bridge, or Acrobat)
- Current College grade level Sophomore or higher; minimum GPA at least a 3.0 to 4.0 on a 4.0 scale; OR a 4.0 to a 5.0 on a 5.0 scale
- Ability to work year-round, Summer 2019 - Spring 2020
- Able to work early mornings, weekdays, evenings, weekends, and holidays, and have a flexible work schedule
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Internet, Outlook, and Social Media
- Efficient time managers who demonstrate the ability to complete projects well and on time
- Video and web experience, a plus
Good knowledge of general office procedures. Basic knowledge of the graphic design and advertising industry. Ability to be a self-starter, organized, reliable, work well with others, follow directions, project a professional image with a positive attitude, pay close attention to detail, and punctual. Ability to work with high level executives and officials. Ability to use digital platforms to advance and promote DCASE events and programs.
