Summer Chaperone, Joffrey Academy of Dance

Joffrey Academy Summer Chaperones will assist with all aspects of student life for the Joffrey Academy of Dance, Official School of the Joffrey Ballet Summer Intensive Programs. Chaperones are primarily responsible for supervising young dance students ages 9-21+ who are participating in Joffrey Academy summer intensive programs and living in the housing facilities throughout the duration of the program. Chaperones work closely with the Head Chaperone, the Academy Director, and the Joffrey Academy administrative staff.

DATE AVAILABILITY: Chaperones must be available June 14 – July 20. Chaperones may not have prior commitments such as classes, part time jobs, or other conflicts during the program weeks. Additional Chaperone positions are also available from July 21 – August 10.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Work closely with a group of 8-30 students, and be responsible for the well-being of the students ensuring the safe and smooth operation of housing program and its activities.  
  • Supervise and support students, and oversee activities during weekends and evenings.  
  • Enforce Joffrey Academy and Housing rules and regulations.
  • Plan and organize activities with core group of students (8-13 students/chaperone).
  • Accompany students to and from studio and dorms each day. Supervise hallways, studios, and common areas on-site at the Joffrey Tower and any Studio Locations used by the Joffrey Academy to ensure student safety and timeliness
  • Communicate with students, parents, Academy staff and other Chaperones regarding schedules, attendance, program and dorm information.
  • Monitor dancers’ conduct and behavior and report any problems or concerns to the Head Chaperone and Academy Director.
  • Chaperone weekend activities, including taking students on public transportation, walking around the city, going to performances, etc…
  • Work with other chaperones in a team environment 
  • Maintain positive and supportive attitude to promote fun and safety in Chicago and in the Joffrey Summer Intensives
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS: Interested candidates should be mature, responsible individuals, preferably with prior Resident Assistant, Camp Counselor, or teaching experience. Dance experience is not required but an interest in the performing arts is a plus. Interested candidate should have experience interacting with students and parents and ability to manage multiple activities in a pressured environment. Chaperones must be at least 19 years old at the start of the program. Chaperones cannot be students enrolled in the 2019 Joffrey Academy Summer Intensive Programs, but may take dance classes if time allows and chaperone is approved by the Academy Artistic Team. Strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion is required

PHYSICAL ABILITY:
  • Must be able to physically assist an injured student which may include lifting and/or supporting their weight (minimum weight lifting requirement: 40 lbs).
  • Must be able to assist students to climb/descend stairs if normal exit routes become unavailable, such as in an emergency
  • Operate an automobile 

COMPENSATION:
$375 per week fee will be paid bi-weekly. Chaperones must live in the Dormitory Housing arranged by the Joffrey Academy. Meals will be provided as follows: breakfast, lunch, dinner Monday-Friday; brunch and dinner Saturday and Sunday. Transportation to and from Chicago, and outside of Joffrey Ballet weekend activities is not provided.

SCHEDULE: Joffrey Academy Chaperones are temporary independent contractors, and must be available 24 hours per day for the duration of the program. Chaperones cannot have any other commitments such as classes, part-time positions, etc. Chaperones must live in the housing facility with the students and supervise them at all times when the students are not in class. Chaperones are allowed one day off each week, which is always on a weekday. Time off schedule will be assigned prior to the start of the program. Evenings and weekends are occupied with supervision of the students. Exact schedules may vary.
