NBCUniversal

Broadcast Operations Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved the hands-on atmosphere of live television. From day one I was thrown into the fast-paced mix, and each day was different! Sometimes I went on field shoots, some days I was primarily editing, and sometimes I was assisting the producers with planning and writing scripts for live interviews. By the end of the internship, I had co-produced 7 live segments!

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to network more with people outside of my department. My days were so packed and the hours were unconventional (7:30am - 3:30pm), so it was difficult to meet with other people in the company.

Advice

Take initiative! Some of the other interns in my department did not get to opportunity to take on as many independent projects as I did because they were not quick enough to the punch or did not speak up about what they were interested in. Additionally, when asked to stay over time, say yes! I didn't get paid overtime, but each late night was so worth it in terms of connecting with my team and getting to take part in special projects. Because of my participation, I was asked to stay at the position for an extra week to help out the crew during a very busy season.

Easy to do well if you socialize with all coworkers, especially from different departments. I don't think internship is great if you want to work on technical projects. I had a lot of fun though!!

Operations and Technology Intern

June - August 2019 • Englewood Cliffs, NJ

What I liked

I really enjoyed the team I worked on in the On-Air Operations department. I also really enjoyed learning about the technology used in the Network Origination Center to broadcast NBC's content. The NBC MediaTech program has a great internship program and provides a lot of fun events and networking opportunities.

What I wish was different

The application processes did take longer than expected so I wish there was more communication from the recruiters during that process.

Advice

I would encourage anyone who is interested in media and technology to apply for the MediaTech program. I also would encourage anyone interning with NBC to take advantage of the large network of talented people that is available to you and meet as many people in your industry of interest as possible.

What I liked

I really got to see what the software development cycle was like, so that was extremely fun. I also had so much fun hanging with my fellow interns.

What I wish was different

As much as I loved my team on quality assurance, I wish I could have gotten to rotate between other teams such as DevOps. I also wish there was more structure within my team.

Advice

Make sure you are getting feedback from your mentor to identify what you’re doing well and how you can improve. Such information is very valuable.

Sales & Marketing Intern

May - August 2019 • Newton Centre, MA

What I liked

Everything. My internship at NBCUniversal was one of the best ones in my entire life. I got to work closely with other departments and network with award-winning producers, filmmakers, and editors. It was an amazing experience because I got to work in breaking news in the control room and other areas in the news station. I developed the Media Kit for the company which helped connect with other clients across the US and the globe. I got to work on the field, attending commercial shoots and working closely with clients like Nissan and Broadway in Boston. I helped with the creation of packages for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and The Hub Today segments.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have had even more on-hands experience at the station. I was in the Sales & Marketing Offices which were on a different location, but I wish I could have gotten more experience in the control room, working in morning news or for The Hub Today. I wish I could have been able to spend every morning working in the control room but I enjoyed working in the sales department. I just wanted more experience in the producing field.

Advice

Networking is important. Never be afraid to do more than you think you can handle. Never be afraid to speak up and say what you think. When you have an internship, make sure you experience other fields in the company. If you are working in sales, make sure you take a day to work in production! Never be afraid to step out of your comfort zone! Get out of the office space and explore other spaces.

MediaTech Intern: Enterprise Software Development

June - August 2019 • Englewood Cliffs, NJ

What I liked

I loved my team, and the great work/life balance. My team was really great about me needing to leave early some days for doctors appointments, other meetings, etc. as long as I completed work assigned to me. I also liked that the management several rungs up the ladder seemed to care about the work I did. I felt like I was really making an impact and creating cool work. Additionally, my team was great about me wanting to learn new skills or technologies and encouraged certifications. I also got the chance to see Late Night with Seth Meyers and Mad Money!

What I wish was different

I wish that there were more organized intern events, there wasn't the same internship culture you see at a lot of other similar companies that sponsor intern retreats, lunches, outings, etc. The people were great, but within their tech. hub (EC) there weren't many young people.

Advice

Make sure you consistently reach out to your team and management for more work and experience so people know who you are/you're aware of what is going on with the team! With such a large organization, it can be easy to get lost in the crowd.

Ad Sales Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

This summer I was incredibly lucky to intern at NBCUniversal Media, LLC with the ad sales team as a creative partnerships intern for the NBC Entertainment group. It was remarkably rewarding to do work in a field that I’m growing more and more passionate about and be given extraordinary chances to test out the waters. I am extremely grateful for the unparalleled experiences this internship provided and forging new opportunities that helped me grow in the entertainment industry.

What I wish was different

Advice

I would take advantage of all the great opportunities offered at the internship! There are so many great access to amazing talented professionals, definitely reach out for time on their schedule.

News Intern

June - August 2019 • Newton, MA

What I liked

I was lucky enough to be assigned to work both with the investigative team on weekdays, and on the assignment desk on weekends. This gave me a wide range of experience, and I gained valuable insight from both positions.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had known a bit more about how the hours were set before I began.

Advice

All of my experience in news prior to this internship was in print journalism, and I would recommend that anyone in print try out broadcast to see if they like it, and vice versa. It's very important now more than ever for journalists to have experience in/experiment in multiple fields.

Content Distribution Partner Marketing Intern

September 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I like the access that it provides me to industry professionals to meet and network with as well as learn what they do day to day.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more work to do. Sometimes I get a tad bored but it may be because I am in a fall internship program rather than a summer when usually a lot is going on especially with interns.

Advice

Just ask a lot of questions, pay great attention to detail in what you do! Make sure you do your work exceptionally well and make time to connect with people on your team.
